I think Sarasota would be hitting a home run if they can win over the Red Sox and entice the team to make Sarasota their new Spring Training home. Within reason, I hope the city of Sarasota does all it can to put the deal together and the tough to convince residents of the area had better open up their minds on this one! See here for a recent article on the topic.
The demolition of the downtown Sarasota Quay is underway. It is expected to take four months to clear the grounds to make way for the new $1 billion Sarasota Bayside development. Once completed, Sarasota Bayside will include three condominium towers, retail space for upscale stores and restaurants, office space, a new hotel, and a new road and parking facilities.
A year and a half since the 80 acres of land nestled north west of Stickney Pt. Rd. west of Swift Rd. South of Constitution Blvd. and east of Tamiami Trail was sold to developer Taylor Woodrow it appears as though the grounds are starting to be cleared and prepared for developing. I noticed this as i drove by yesterday afternoon. At a purchase price of $40 million in Jan of 2006 the sale was amongst the highest price per acre ever paid for residential property in Southwest Florida. Taylor Woodrow plans on developing a gated community of 360 homes in a Tuscan Italian architectural style featuring a mixture of two story townhomes and condos and detached courtyard homes. The estimated average price per residence is expected to be $750,000. I am looking forward to watching this project evolve, so keep an eye out for my updates. For more info on the purchase of the land read the newspaper article from Jan 17, 2006 by Stephen Frater of the Sarasota Herald Tribune.
